TAKE CARE OF YOUR MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH
Our mission, or true Dharma* at 108, is to offer the yoga student an experience guide by unconditional authenticity.
We follow the dedicated teachings of the Sivananda lineage, in combination with the classical traditions and ancient knowledge as taught in the sacred texts of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads. This vast wealth of knowledge is revealed to us by the enlightened Sages of old.
At 108, we’ve chosen to re-focus on the fundamental values of Yoga, in its truest and most sacred form.
Our desire is to unlock these teachings and to sweep aside the illusions so often created by the mainstream, contemporary yoga scene, where the student remains locked into a superficial practise which feeds the ego, whilst toning the body.
108 believes in a holistic vision; a vision that honours the intrinsic knowledge of Yoga, which as the ancient teachers revealed, is a source of profound growth and the key to awakening what lies deep within us all.
* The universal order of nature
Just as an Astronomer looks up far into the galaxy, longing to grasp the mysteries of the universe, so it is for the Yogis, who chose to dive within, in order to understand life’s mysteries and experience their true inner selves.
Yoga theory is the guide which orientates us towards a clearer understanding of Self.
Whilst the practical aspects of Yoga teach us to be both patient and humble and enables us to refine and calm the chaotic mind, It also helps us to grow and expand into an inner space where we gain meaningful insight into a more genuine notion of ourselves, versus who we think we are, or should be.
Self knowledge is the traditional focus of Yoga, known in sanskrit as Atma jnana.
With in the yogic tradition, the laboratory is our body and mind complex, the tools are life’s experiences, the guidebooks are the scriptures, the professor is the Guru, and we, the practitioners, are the students.
On this fertile journey we are strengthen our knowledge with the invaluable words and philosophy from the Advaita Vedanta, which offers a vast, intellectual vision, allowing us to fully appreciate how the knowledge of the Self can be experienced in the present moment.
We invite you to remember, that you were never born and you will never die. Om Prem.
Imagine an infinite ocean of consciousness, constant in it’s cycling motion of rolling waves, small, large and always majestic. These waves represent our thoughts and their energetic motion. Inside this never ending cycle, the thoughts become the object of our own self perception.
Meditation, pranayama, repetition of mantras, chanting, influence the vibration of the waves (thoughts), increasing their frequency, with the effect of silencing the mind and promoting a state of peace, calm and serenity.
From the ocean the waves emerge, created from the depths below, raising up to the ocean’s surface. In turn the waves crash back down upon the shore, this movement remains forever in a continuous cycle.
This same process exists inside our mind, and as we practise and grow, we learn to bear witness to this constant cycle, and in return, we are able to evolve and grow in self awareness. With this self knowledge we can see that these thoughts are not who we actually are. We existed long before our thoughts arrived and we will continue to exist long after these thoughts have disappeared. We are part of this eternal cycle.
